This is one of the most common questions we're asked, and almost always by owners who are anything but selfish. Asking it at all is usually a sign of just how much thought and care you're putting into this decision — not a sign that you're taking the easy way out.

The word "selfish" tends to surface because part of you doesn't want to let go — and that feeling can get tangled up with the decision itself, as though wanting more time with them makes the choice about you rather than them. It doesn't. Loving your dog and choosing what's kindest for them aren't in conflict; the guilt just makes it feel that way.

🐾What's actually selfish, and what isn't

Choosing euthanasia because your dog is suffering, and you can no longer bear to watch that suffering continue, is not selfish — it's often the last act of care you can offer them. What would be harder, and is sometimes mistaken for love, is holding on past the point your dog still has enough good days to make waiting the kinder choice. Neither instinct makes you a bad owner. But it's worth being honest with yourself about which one is driving the decision.

🐾A different way to ask the question

Instead of "am I being selfish," it can help to ask: "Am I making this choice for their comfort, or to avoid my own grief a little longer?" There's no shame in either answer — grief is real, and putting it off is human. But naming it honestly often brings more clarity than the original question ever could.
